डेनमार्क इसका सबसे बड़ा उत्पादक है और वहीं पर ऊदबिलावों में सबसे ज्यादा कोविड मामले सामने आए हैं। डेनमार्क के ऊदबिलावों को मारने के साथ ही वायरस का वह रूप खत्म नहीं हुआ। अप्रैल में नीदरलैंड्स, जून में डेनमार्क, फिर स्पेन, इटली, लिथुएनिया, स्वीडन, ग्रीस, कनाडा और अमेरिका में भी फैला। फार्म वाले ऊदबिलावों में कोरोना वायरस कम से कम नौ देशों में पाया जा चुका है। अमेरिका में यह पहला केस अक्टूबर में आया था। वायरस के जंगल में फैलने का डर भी सच साबित हुआ। 13 दिसंबर को अमेरिका के ऊटा में एक कोविड संक्रमित जंगली ऊदबिलाव पाया गया। जंगल में वायरस कितना फैला है, इसका पता अभी नहीं है। लेकिन अगर ये और फैला तो मुसीबत आनी तय है। हर बार हम महामारी को वैक्सीन और लॉकडाउन्स से काबू में लाएंगे, वह जंगल से फिर फैलेगा। यानी इंसानों में बार-बार संक्रमण के मामले सामने आने लगेंगे। इंसानों और ऊदबिलावों के बीच जितनी बार वायरस का आदान-प्रदान होगा, एक खतरनाक म्यूटेशन की संभावना बढ़ जाती है। नए ‘यूके स्ट्रेन’ में दिखा एक बदलाव ऊदबिलाव में मिले वायरस वैरियंट में पहले ही दिख चुका था। ऐसे संक्रमण की संभावना ज्यादा है क्योंकि ऊदबिलावों को श्वसन तंत्र में इन्फेक्शन का ज्यादा खतरा रहता है। अगर किसी फार्म वर्कर को कोविड हो और वह बाड़े के पास खांसे या छींक दे तो पूरे फार्म के ऊदबिलावों में वायरस फैलने में समय नहीं लगता। वायरस का म्यूटेशन हर समय जारी रहता है।
जानकारी के अनुसार, ऊदबिलाव के भीतर वायरस में हुए बदलाव इंसानों तक नहीं पहुंचे। लेकिन बदलावों का एक सेट जिसे ‘क्लस्टर 5’ कहा गया, वह डेनमार्क के 12 लोगों में फैला। इसके अलावा 200 अन्य लोगों में भी ऊदबिलाव वाले वायरस के थोड़े परिवर्तित रूप पाए गए। क्लस्टर 5 चिंता की वजह बन चुका है क्योंकि इसमें उस स्पाइक प्रोटीन में बदलाव हुआ जिसका इस्तेमाल वैक्सीन शरीर को कोविड के प्रति लड़ने के लिए ट्रेन करने में करती हैं। टेस्ट्स ने दिखाया कि क्लस्टर 5 के प्रति मरीजों की ऐंटीबॉडीज ने हल्का रेस्पांस दिया। नए स्ट्रेन की बात सामने आने के बाद ब्रिटेन एक तरह से अलग-थलग हो गया है। हालांकि एक एनसलिसिस बताता है कि यूके ने बेहद जिम्मेदारी से नए स्ट्रेन का सामना किया। वहां नए स्ट्रेन की पहचान जल्दी इसलिए हो पाई क्योंकि उसके यहां दुनिया का सबसे बेहतरीन और व्यापक जेनेटिक सीक्वेंसिंग प्रोग्राम है।
